Philippine Public School and Kumon Math

It's been an ongoing debate within our household why am I deliberately sending my son to public school when in fact I could make "gapang" aka Filipino way of sacrificing one's child's education by owing as many people as I could in order for me to send my son to private school and have him graduate there.

As a parent I've seen and experienced first-hand my son coming from a private school. I have also experienced the headaches parents like me go thru just to buy another project, buy another book, buy another costume for such and such occasion, pay another school fee, pay another field trip, etc. Yes there are differences but, in my opinion, the differences could definitely be managed. I cannot say I'm an eccentric type of parent, but I like my kids to develop their love for learning, and I would love for them to encounter the things that most people do not even give attention to just because no one has ever brought it out to them. Get that?

Let's say, Math. Like 99.9% of the pure Filipinos "I" know do not like Math. As a matter of fact, they hate it. Why? It's not really their lack of ability to understand the concepts of Math rather, as I have observed, it's more of along the way while their growing minds are still blossoming in the understanding of the subject, they just woke up and got lost in track of the core concepts. I don't know if it's the teachers, the students, or the parents. It's not my intention to point fingers here. But as a parent, I'd like my son to be able to face his fears and that he will be able to realize that anything could be learned and understood as long as you put your heart and mind to it.

As a parent, I don't want to stay in the office burning my arse coz I need more money to put my child to school whilst my child is being taken cared of nannies who couldn't care for him as much as I do. I'd rather have him guided by a reputable public school teacher whose dedication to his students is above the roof whilst he is also being disciplined by the ancient Japanese practices of Kumon by repeating a concept over and over again to the point of understanding and mastery, and all of these under my guidance and council.

That's why I decided to put my son thru the discipline of Kumon Math Method of Learning. It only not disciplines him, but it also disciplines me to discipline him. =) What Kumon is for me will be another story for another day.

I am a traditional mum. To the point that I want to personally oversee my child's learning. Had I not been working I would have homeschooled my son. Although I couldn't say I'm a perfect parent as I am still searching for ways in order for me to tickle his curiosity. I am a teacher at heart and a sucker for all things conceptual and psychological. I myself wished so bad that I was personally taught in Math.

Why?

I've found out that people make good decisions whenever they see this world in numbers. :)
